'It's every girl's dream!' Cheryl Fernandez-Versini wears bridal inspired gown

She has a new name, a new husband, a new album and a new place as returning judge on The X Factor, but Wednesday evening was all about the new fragrance as Cheryl Fernandez-Versini attended its exclusive launch party in central London.
The 31-year-old singer looked stunning in a rather apt bridal inspired evening gown as she swept into upmarket restaurant Avenue in St. James’s Street, close to the city’s Green Park.
Cheryl – who stunned fans by marrying French restaurateur Jean-Bernard after a whirlwind romance – revealed her nicely toned legs thanks to a generous thigh-length slash, while lace embellishments afforded the gown a decorative flourish.

New knee op using stem cells could stop arthritis and extend sporting careers

Surgeons have designed a new operation which they hope could prevent the development of arthritis and extend sporting careers.
The procedure, which is currently being trialled at Southampton General Hospital, involves coating damaged cartilage with stem cells, taken from a patient’s own hip, and surgical glue.
If successful, it will regenerate the remaining tissue and create a permanent 'like-for-like' replacement for the first time.
Surgeons at University Hospital Southampton have pioneered a new operation to treat knee injuries, which they hope will extend sporting careers. Argentinian striker Luis Suarez had an operation to remove his damaged meniscus, part of the cartilage in the knee, prior to the World Cup

Cartilage is a tough, flexible tissue that covers the surface of joints and enables bones to slide over one another while reducing friction and acting as a shock absorber.
Damage to the tissue in the knee is common and occurs mainly following sudden twists or direct blows, such as falls or heavy tackles playing sports such as football and rugby, but can also develop over time through gradual wear and tear.

Hospital cases of gout rose by more than a fifth in the last five years, say new figures.
Far from being consigned to the history books, the painful condition which famously afflicted Henry VIII is becoming more common and severe.
Almost 6,000 people needed to be admitted to hospital for gout last year, most of them men and aged 60 and over.
The increase suggests their condition is being poorly controlled by GPs, say experts, although many people put off seeking help in the early stages which may lead to complications.
Historically known as 'the king of diseases and the disease of kings', gout has long thought to be caused by an overindulgent lifestyle.

Michele Price, 47, was left in a coma after routine surgery to investigate pelvic pain went horribly wrong
A woman admitted to hospital for keyhole surgery was left fighting for life after doctors accidentally tore her bowel.
Michele Price was admitted to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham to have her pelvic pain investigated.
The 47-year-old went home the same day but was rushed back to hospital early the next morning, suffering from severe abdominal pain and vomiting.
A CT scan performed two days later revealed her bowel had been sliced open and fluid was leaking into the rest of her body.
Further exploratory surgery then confirmed she had two holes in her bowel.
Doctors removed a section of her intestines and flushed out as much as the infection as they could.
But they were forced to leave her stomach open for two days in an attempt to avoid Ms Price needing a stoma bag fitted.

The age at which a girl reaches puberty could affect her risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and breast cancer later in life, scientists believe.
A new study carried out at the University of Cambridge has found the age at which a girl reaches sexual maturity is determined by which parent they inherit specific genes from.
Imprinted genes are a set inherited from just one parent, and as such their activity differs depending on which parent passes the gene on.
And the discovery could pave the way for genetic studies into the links between puberty and the likelihood of developing a range of disease later in life, the researchers said.

The SLS RS-25 engine on a Test Stand at the agency's Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Four will be used to power the world's biggest rocket into orbit.

It is set to become the largest rocket ever built, dwarfing the rockets that took man to the moon and paving the way for manned missions to Mars.
Nasa today said it is about to start testing the  engines for the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket - on the same stand that were used to perfect the Apollo rockets.
Four engines, a modified version of the space shuttle main engine that powered missions into space from 1981 to 2011, will be used on the mega-rocket.
'This test series is a major milestone because it will be our first opportunity to operate the engine with a new controller and to test propellant inlet conditions for SLS that are different than the space shuttle,' said Steve Wofford, SLS Liquid Engines Element manager.
Earlier this year Nasa signed a $2.8 billion contract with Boeing to build the giant rocket it is hoped will take us into deep space.
'Our teams have dedicated themselves to ensuring that the Space Launch System (SLS) – the largest ever - will be built safely, affordably and on time,' said Virginia Barnes, Boeing SLS vice president and program manager.
'We are passionate about NASA’s mission to explore deep space.
'It’s a very personal mission, as well as a national mandate.'
This milestone marks NASA’s first CDR on a deep-space human exploration launch vehicle since 1961, when the Saturn V rocket underwent a similar design review as the United States sought to land an astronaut on the moon.
Scheduled for its initial test flight in 2017, the SLS is designed to be flexible and evolvable to meet a variety of crew and cargo mission needs.

Gareth Bale: I want to help Real Madrid win SIX trophies next season by scoring

Gareth Bale says he is feeling stronger than ever after a full summer of rest and is ready to lead Real Madrid’s quest to win six trophies next season.
If they are to pull off the grand slam they will have to become the first team ever to retain the Champions League but Bale, who goes back to Cardiff next month to compete for the first of those cups, believes anything is possible after another summer of spending in the Spanish capital.
Speaking from Real Madrid’s training camp in California Bale said: 'We have six trophies that we can win and we want to win all of them. It will be special playing the Super Cup in Cardiff. That’s the first one we can win but we will be fighting for everything.

LG G3 vs. HTC One (M8): Duel duo

How do you compare phones that are so different - the LG G3 and HTC One (M8) barely have a common feature between them. As we found out though, even different specs can create a similar user experience, it's more than just a numbers game.
LG G3 vs. HTC One M8
Going into this article we had a certain idea of how things will work out but a series of tests once again proved that specs rarely tell the whole story. The 5.5" QHD screen should handily beat the 5" 1080p screen, right? And the contest between a 3,000mAh battery and a 2,600mAh one should be fairly straightforward.
It should but the LG G3 proved less dominant than it sounds on paper. The HTC One (M8) on the other hand, still has downsides it found hard to overcome. Here's a quick blow by blow of where each phone dominates its opponent.

LG G3 over HTC One (M8)

  • Larger, sharper screen - 5.5" QHD over 5" 1080p
  • Practically the same size, lighter
  • 13MP camera with OIS over 4MP camera; Laser autofocus
  • 2160p video capture over 1080p video
  • More powerful chipset, 3GB of RAM over 2GB (32GB model only)
  • Bigger battery - 3,000mAh vs. 2,600mAh; user-accessible to boot
  • The back cover has wireless charging support

Xiaomi may have sold less than 10,000 Mi 3 units in India

Xiaomi made its debut in India this month, and yesterday the Chinese smartphone maker held its first flash sale in the subcontinent.
The company proudly boasted that its Mi 3 sold out in under 40 minutes. However, Xiaomi omitted to mention just how many units were actually available for purchase. That kind of screamed 'publicity stunt' even then, and now a few unnamed sources allegedly came forward and confirmed it.

It turns out that less than 10,000 Mi 3 smartphones were on offer yesterday. In this context, the 40-minute sell out period definitely seems less impressive, though it's still not bad performance by any stretch of the imagination.

Update brings improved performance to Euro Galaxy S5

The European Samsung Galaxy S5 is currently receiving an over the air update that carries performance improvements with it.
The update comes in two parts - the first one is the huge chunk clocking in at 194MB and right after it comes a 1MB additional update. Samsung isn't specifying why it needs almost 200MB downloaded and installed on the smartphone and only states "improved performance".

Upon updating the device we didn't find any additional software that might account for the update size. As for performance, well the device was already as fast as fast gets so it's hard to feel the difference .
The annoying thing about the update being split into two is that your Galaxy S5 will need to reboot one more time, but the second update takes almost no time to install.
This is the second major update for the Samsung Galaxy S5, the first came about a month after the device hit the shelves with a much-needed improvement on camera speed.
The update is currently live in the UK as well as Eastern Europe and perhaps has already gradually rolled out elsewhere. If you of you have received it outside of the Old Continent give us a word in the comments.

Nokia Lumia 530 goes official with dual-SIM version in tow

The Nokia Lumia 530 is official and is even less of an upgrade than we expected. It comes in single-SIM and dual-SIM versions which will come out in August and cost €85 ($115) before taxes and subsidies.
The phone has a 4" display with 854 x 480 resolution – it's a similar display to the one on the Nokia Lumia 520 but it has 16:9 aspect ratio. The info about ClearBlack proved false and it's just a regular LCD (the 520 screen was awful in direct sunlight). Oh, and it's not an IPS display like the 520 had.

The chipset has been switched to Snapdragon 200 with a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 processor with Adreno 302. The processor should be slightly faster than the dual 1GHz Krait of the old model, but the GPU is a downgrade over Adreno 305. The phone still has 512MB RAM, same as the Lumia 630.

iPhone 6 could be unveiled in mid-September

The leaks about the iPhone 6 are everywhere these days, pouring in like there's no tomorrow. But what about when Apple will actually announce its latest smartphone?
Thanks to a few unnamed sources, who claim they were briefed on the Cupertino company's plans, we now have an unveiling time frame to speak of.
And just as you may have expected, it's reportedly bound to happen in September. Nothing is set in stone just yet, but the second and third weeks of that month seem to be the only ones left in the running for the placement of Apple's event. Just a couple of days ago we heard that September 19 would be the big date, and that's in the third week of the month, so it fits.
However, do note that various "manufacturing uncertainties" might alter these plans. Whenever the event does happen, it will introduce the 4.7-inch iPhone to the world. This is said to be a given, along with the company providing the final details about iOS 8 (which has been in beta for weeks).
The 5.5-inch iPhone 6, on the other hand, may not get mentioned at all at this September gathering. A final decision on whether it will debut alongside its smaller sibling hasn't been made yet. That's because the 4.7" phone is currently farther along both in testing as well as manufacturing preparations.
Obviously Apple could in the end decide to out both models at the same time, or the phablet may be presented later - perhaps in October, when a second fall event is scheduled to take place. This is when Apple's entry into the wearable space might finally become reality, and it's also when it will talk more about the latest version of Mac OS X, Yosemite.

Jose Mourinho wants Petr Cech to stay at Chelsea alongside Thibaut Courtois

Jose Mourinho has declared a desire to keep both Thibaut Courtois and Petr Cech at Chelsea this season even though he accepts he will soon have to make one of them extremely unhappy.
The Chelsea manager watched Cech make an impressive return from a serious shoulder injury in a pre-season friendly here against RZ Pellets WAC after young French striker Jeremie Boga cancelled out Silvio De Oliveira’s opener for the hosts.
But Cech faces a serious threat to his place for the first time in a decade at Stamford Bridge, with Courtois the favourite to start against Burnley in Chelsea’s Premier League opener on August 18.
Courtois does not report for training until July 30 but the Belgian international was outstanding for Atletico Madrid last season and impressed in the World Cup too.

Late nights and artificial light can damage a woman's fertility, a study has warned.

This is because the hormone melatonin - which protects a woman's eggs from stress - is produced in the dark.

Leanne Storey, from Belfast in Northern Ireland, claims she was told her pregnancy was 'not viable'.
The 27-year-old was told she had suffered a molar pregnancy - where cells fail to form into a foetus - with doctors advising she undergo surgery to remove the tissue.
The mother-of-two had surgery, but was shocked when at a follow-up scan medics told her had detected a heartbeat.

Photosynthesis in action: Scientists capture moment plant converts energy

Scientists have announced they are closer than ever to the ‘holy grail’ of biochemistry: artificial photosynthesis.
By observing the first stage of the process in action, they say they’ve got a better understanding of how plans turn carbon dioxide into oxygen.
And ultimately it may be an important step to a future where artificial plants are created that are more efficient than their organic siblings.
Scientists have observed the water splitting process in plants that creates oxygen, known as photosystem II. The cycle, illustrated here, has four steps. The largest change is between steps S1 and S3, so this is the part the scientists 'zoomed in' on to capture their freeze-frame

World Cup 2014: 10 things we have learned from the festival of football in Brazil

As the World Cup final line-up is confirmed with Germany once again facing Argentina on the ultimate stage and after five weeks of breathtaking action, Sportsmail's ROB DRAPER looks back over what we have seen at Brazil 2014 to determine what we have learned from the greatest football show on Earth.

1) Brazil have long since ceased to be the custodians of the beautiful game
We didn’t need the humiliation of the semi final to demonstrate that, though that result will forever be cited as the point at which Brazil lost its moral authority. The sterility of the opening games and the quarter-final against Colombia, when they set out to kick a team off the pitch, did as much damage. The last Brazil team that dazzled was in 2002, with Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Ironically it too was managed by Luiz Felipe Scolari. But, given a poorer generation of players, his cynicism simply looked brutish. Jogo Bonito has become an awful cliche which only has credibility in the minds of Nike executives who seemed to think that slick marketing and multi-million pound deals are all you need to sustain the 'brand.'

Louis van Gaal 'won't be afraid of taking over at Manchester United' and wants to revive the club's fortunes, says Ryan Giggs

Louis van Gaal won’t be daunted by taking over at Manchester United and is ‘relishing’ the opportunity to revive the club’s fortunes, according to his assistant Ryan Giggs.
The Dutchman will arrive at Old Trafford next week after he fulfils his World Cup commitments with Holland following Saturday’s Third Place Playoff against hosts Brazil.
Giggs has had limited contact with the 62-year-old during the tournament but insists that he cannot wait to take up his new role.
