The Peoples Elephants had to come back twice to level in a match which was a battle of former players of the home side.
Enyimba will lead the log pending the outcome of the match between second-placed Sunshine Stars and Sharks in Akure on Thursday.
Goals from Musa Najare and Aloy Browne for Enyimba cancelled out strikes from Aniekpeno Udoh and Aniekan Ekpe for Akwa United to earn the former champions a hard fought point.
Udoh scored first in the third minute from a header before Najare struck a fine finish in the 30th minute for the equaliser.
Ekpe struck for the hosts in the 57th minute from the spot after Chinedu Udoji brought down Udoh in the penalty area. But Browne scored on his debut for the Aba side in the 63rd minute to give Enyimba a point.
League champions, Kano Pillars, won their second consecutive match since the return of coach Baba Ganaru. The team came from a goal down to beat Heartland 2-1 in Kano on Wednesday.
An own goal from Babangida Hassan in the 22nd minute gifted Heartland the lead before goals from Azeez Shobowale in the 41st minute and Rabiu Ali from the spot in the 80th minute gave the champions the three points.
In other matches, Shooting Stars came from behind to beat Wikki Tourists 2-1 from a Tope Orelope brace. Lobi Stars beat Bayelsa United 3-0, Kwara United beat Dolphins 2-1 and Rangers beat FC Taraba 1-0.
