Sevilla coach Unai Emery has voiced his admiration for Lionel Messi in the wake of his side's 5-4 Uefa Super Cup loss to Barcelona on Tuesday by saying the Argentine makes the difference

After falling 4-1 behind, the Europa League holders fought back to take the game into extra time, but a Pedro goal in the 115th minute saw the Catalans emerge victorious. Messi played a key role in Barcelona's win - netting two free-kicks, while also having a hand in the winner - and Emery was quick to acknowledge the Argentine's decisive role.
"I want to congratulate Lionel Messi too – his ability to play at the highest level with Barcelona and their consistency is what wins them trophies," Emery told reporters.
"There's a huge amount of teamwork behind it. Everyone has their role so that he can make the difference. Can we stop him next time? We'll try."
Nevertheless, Emery was left optimistic despite his side's late loss to the Champions League holders.
"I do not know if the result is fair, but with the chances we had, I am left with honey on the lips.
"If there's one thing we want to make this team, it is competitive. We want to go for victory whatever the circumstances. If you can reach the Super Cup and Champions League  then you have to compete with these teams and see how far you can go.
"We lost but we were competitive throughout and we are very proud of our team. The worst thing would have been not to have recognised the Sevilla we want to see. "
